Codfish Festival in Padua in the Jewish Ghetto on Sunday 10 November 2024. Tasting points of baccalà mantecato with polenta along the most picturesque streets of the historic centre.
There are many typical Veneto dishes, but who does not know polenta and salt cod? A delicacy, appreciated all over the world.
Not everyone knows that stockfish arrived in Veneto thanks to a Venetian nobleman, Pietro Querini merchant, Senator of the Venetian Republic (1400-1448). He made the product known in the dominions of the Serenissima – Vicenza and Padua – by spreading the stockfish, ‘stokkfisk’, which means ‘stick fish’ in Norwegian.
At 11.00 a.m., in front of the Palazzo del Bo, historical re-enactment with 15th century Venetian costumes and a descendant of the Querini family who will narrate: the return of Pietro Querini from Rost, with the Pesce Bastone, and his long journey.
Then the procession will move to Piazza delle Erbe. Querini will meet the Doge in Via San Martino e Solferino, and along Via San Martino e Solferino, Via San Canziano, Via Soncin, Piazza Duomo, and Via delle piazze, it will be possible to taste this delicacy: stoccafisso mantecato.
There will be 8 tasting stations with participants wearing the costumes of the time. The costume procession will wind its way through the streets of the Ghetto amidst the stories and experiences of Pietro Querini on the island.
The event is conceived by the ‘Roccadacqua’ Cultural Association with the contribution and patronage of the Department of Commerce and Productive Activities of the City of Padua and the collaboration of the ‘CIBI’O’ Theatre Company of Pordenone.
